Stopwatch 60s, cage velo, and the numbers nobody measured
Tryout season is when families compare numbers that are not the same measurement. Four things from the published data worth knowing before anyone panics or celebrates.
1. Hand times run fast, and the amount is measured
Timers react to the start. Research on sprint timing measured experienced hand-timers at 0.22 ± 0.07 seconds fast against a fully automatic clock, and novices at 0.26 ± 0.08. That is not a cheap stopwatch and it is not cheating - it is human reaction, and it applies to a 60-yard dash exactly as it applies to any other sprint.
If the time on the phone was hand-caught, the honest read of a 7.4 is "about 7.6 electronic, and now we know the baseline." That is not bad news. A baseline is where training starts.
2. A cage max and an in-game average are different stats wearing the same name
Baseball America published D1 in-game, season-long exit velocity in 2025. The D1 average is 86.1 mph. The average of 90th-percentile peaks is 101.6 mph.
That 15 mph gap is the difference between "my kid hits 95 in the cage" and what a college season actually measures. A showcase max belongs next to the 101.6 column. A season of at-bats belongs next to the 86.1. Both numbers are real. They answer different questions, and most recruiting conversations mix them without noticing.
3. You do not need to throw 95
The same outlet published what is effectively a census of D1 pitching: 5,259 pitchers, 142,297 innings - more than 99% of everyone who threw a D1 pitch that season.

The velo arms race on the showcase circuit is chasing the top decile, not the job description. Four out of five D1 innings are thrown by pitchers your kid can realistically become.
4. Nobody has ever published a measured D1 average 60
We have looked hard. No measured D1 average 60-yard dash exists in public, at any level - and the same is true of infield and outfield throw velocity and catcher pop time. Every chart you have seen with a "D1 average 60" on it is somebody's estimate. Some estimates are reasonable. None of them are measurements.
Ours included: Athlete Quotient's 60-yard rung is our own benchmark, and our tables say so instead of claiming a source that does not exist. Where a real measured figure is published - like the exit velocity and fastball numbers above - we use it and cite it. A benchmark can be honest about what it is. A "D1 average" nobody measured cannot.
What a family should actually do
Compare same-clock to same-clock. Label every velo number as a max or an average before comparing it to anything. Treat a chart that does not state its method as marketing until proven otherwise. And track the gap, not the cutoff - a 60 that moves from 7.6 to 7.4 on the same clock is real progress no matter what a showcase flyer says.
